The Medical Education Major within the Doctor of Medical Science (DMS) degree program provides PAs with advanced training in health professions education. Designed by PAs for working PAs who are currently educators or are interested in pursuing educational roles, this fully online, 12-month program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to design effective learning experiences, mentor learners, and excel in leadership in academic and clinical training environments.
The curriculum integrates principles of curriculum design and delivery, assessment, program evaluation, academic leadership and administration, and educational scholarship to prepare PAs for leadership roles in higher education and the broader PA profession. Students also develop research and scholarly writing skills necessary to design, evaluate, and disseminate educational innovations that advance the science and practice of PA education.
To maintain strong clinical relevance, students also complete one elective course from the Clinical Medicine major, allowing them to deepen expertise in a topic of interest while strengthening their ability to design and deliver high-quality medical education.
The curriculum consists of a flexible three-semester structure designed for working clinicians. Coursework in educational theory, curriculum design, instruction, assessment, and program evaluation prepares students to design and deliver high-quality PA education. Students complete a longitudinal scholarly project focused on advancing PA education, alongside elective coursework to deepen clinical expertise and strengthen teaching and curriculum development skills.
