Unique Programs

Badge Program

The Lincoln Memorial University–Richard A. Gillespie College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) has launched a novel, elective micro-credentialing “badging” program designed to augment the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum and support competency-based veterinary education. The program allows students to pursue focused skill development in areas of professional interest while documenting achievement through secure, digital credentials. During the first year of implementation, seven badges were developed, each with bronze, silver, and gold milestone levels spanning areas, such as bovine and equine palpation, diagnostic ultrasound, leadership, field surgery, and statistical coding. Badges are awarded based on defined competencies and documented evidence reviewed by faculty mentors, providing students with a transparent and rigorous pathway to demonstrate progressive mastery beyond core curricular requirements.

Digital credentials are issued and maintained through blockchain-secured software, creating a verifiable and incorruptible record of student achievement that may be shared with employers, internship and residency programs, or other stakeholders at the student’s discretion. Students report pursuing badges both to deepen skills in targeted areas and to differentiate themselves in a competitive job and advanced training market. The College intends to expand badge offerings in areas of high student interest and to continue evaluating stakeholder perceptions to ensure the program remains responsive to workforce and professional needs.
