Preceptor Development

  •   What is Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Continuing Medical Education (CME) is a structured educational process designed to ensure that healthcare professionals stay current with advancements in their respective fields. It involves ongoing learning and skill development beyond initial training, allowing practitioners to maintain and enhance their competence throughout their careers. CME activities encompass a variety of formats, such as conferences, workshops, online courses, precepting students, and self-directed learning. By engaging in CME, healthcare professionals stay abreast of evolving medical knowledge, technologies, and best practices and fulfill regulatory requirements, ensuring the delivery of high-quality and up-to-date patient care.

  •   Are LMU SMS preceptors eligible for CMEs?

Through a partnership between the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) and the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), ARC-PA-accredited PA programs may submit an annual application to receive eligibility to award AAPA Category 1 CME to their PA preceptors. Individual preceptors may be awarded a maximum of 10 AAPA Category 1 CME credits for precepting per calendar year.

LMU School of Medical Sciences Physician Assistant Programs are eligible to award these credits.

  •   What category and how many CME credits can a preceptor earn?

Category 1: Individual preceptors may be awarded AAPA Category 1 CME credits at a rate of 2 AAPA Category 1 CME credits per PA student per 40-hour week, with no limit. Category 2: Claimed on an hour-per-hour basis (i.e., if you precept 80 hours, you can claim 80 Category 2 credit hours).

Category 2 only (verified with a letter)

According to AOA guidelines for Osteopathic Physicians, no credit is available for precepting physician assistant or nurse practitioner students.

Category 2 Only (verified with a letter)
