The Master of Education with Initial Teacher Licensure (MEdITL) program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree and want to become licensed teachers while earning a master's degree. Ideal for career changers and professionals seeking entry into the teaching profession, this accelerated program offers flexible hybrid, online, and face-to-face learning options to accommodate busy adult learners. Through graduate coursework and supervised clinical experiences, candidates develop expertise in evidence-based instruction, classroom management, assessment, literacy, inclusive teaching practices, and data-informed decision-making while meeting Tennessee requirements for teacher licensure.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the MEd with Initial Teacher Licensure program will:

  • Meet Tennessee requirements for initial teacher licensure through an approved educator preparation program.
  • Develop the knowledge and instructional skills needed to teach diverse learners using evidence-based practices.
  • Complete extensive clinical experiences under the guidance of experienced educators and university faculty.
  • Build expertise in literacy, assessment, instructional technology, and data-informed decision making.
  • Prepare for careers as licensed teachers in public, private, and charter schools.
  • Benefit from an educator preparation program accredited through CAEP and approved by the Tennessee Department of Education.

Master of Education Degree Requirements

Earning your master's degree with a teaching certificate from LMU requires you to meet specific benchmarks during the program. To graduate, you must meet or exceed the following requirements:

  • Completion of the credit hours specified in your program of study.
  • Passing score on the PRAXIS® exams (see job-embedded requirements).
    • You must pass the PRAXIS® as a prerequisite for student teaching.
  • Complete all requirements for clinical practice  EDUC 591 or EDUC 593.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B).
  • Payment of all fees.
  • Completion of necessary interviews and surveys.
  • Compliance with Institutional Research Board policies.
