Student Research Opportunities

Curriculum Integration

We at LMU-OPCVM believe a foundational understanding of research is essential to grow clinicians rooted in evidence-based medicine. We have developed a three-course series that develops a foundation in evidence-based medicine, research literacy, and research methodology for our students. In the first semester, students will be introduced to the principles of evidence-based veterinary medicine. Emphasis is placed on retrieving and critically evaluating a wide range of veterinary information to support clinical reasoning and the identification of unresolved questions in veterinary medicine. In the second semester, students will apply this knowledge to design a well-defined research question and a discrete, achievable research plan to address their question. This progression culminates in the third semester, partnering student teams with faculty for hands-on research experience. The results of these student-led research projects will be the basis for platform and poster presentation at the LMU-OPCVM Phi Zeta Research Day.

Student Research

Phi Zeta Research Day

We at LMU-OPCVM recognize, encourage, and reward students who excel in research. The LMU-OPCVM Phi Zeta Research Day will be an annual, college-wide event showcasing the research efforts of our students and will serve as a platform to communicate student research opportunities. The event will be attended by OPCVM students and faculty members, as well as faculty from Jacksonville University, the Marine Science Research Institute, the Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, and others from the LMU and Jacksonville community.

Research Day will commence with a keynote speaker, and highlight platform and poster presentations from students mentored by faculty from both LMU-OPCVM and our collaborative partners. Student research opportunities and new initiatives for student involvement in research projects will also be presented.
