Clinical Rotation Descriptions

Third Year Clinical Rotation Descriptions:

  

DO CLIN 801 Behavioral Health (8.0 Credit Hours):
Four weeks focusing on the evaluation, intervention and management of the psychiatric patient. Emphasis is placed on the medical student learning the triage and community integration of treatment models treating the patient in the setting close to home rather than the inpatient psychiatric hospital. This month will offer the integration of the inpatient psychiatric treatment model with the goal of community treatment and placement for the mentally ill patient.

 

DO CLIN 802 Internal Medicine I (8.0 Credit Hours):
Four weeks of training concentrates on the care of the adult patient in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The student will learn to apply clinical knowledge while learning how to function as part of a health care team. At least one of the four-week rotations (IM I or IM II) must be completed at an inpatient facility.

 

DO CLIN 803 Internal Medicine II (8.0 Credit Hours):
Four weeks of training concentrates on the care of the adult patient in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The student will learn to apply clinical knowledge while learning how to function as part of a health care team. Increases the consolidation of educational goals by providing continuity of environment and faculty found in IM I.

 

DO CLIN 804 Women's Health (8.0 Credit Hours):
Four weeks of training in the inpatient or outpatient setting to become familiar with the care of medical and surgical issues related to the female genitourinary system. This will include the evaluation and care of the pregnant patient for prenatal, delivery and post-natal period.

 

DO CLIN 805 General Surgery (8.0 Credit Hours):
Four weeks of training in the hospital setting under the supervision of a hospital-based general surgeon(s). This will include the evaluation, surgical intervention, consultation and follow-up of the adult male and female population.

 

DO CLIN 806 Pediatrics (8.0 Credit Hours):
This four-week rotation provides clinical training in general pediatrics in the outpatient setting and will have students experience the care of infants children and adolescents issues specific to infancy, childhood and adolescence. The student will learn to complete an appropriate history and physical exam for pediatric patients from birth to age 21. Emphasis will be placed on preventive health management for evaluation of growth milestones as well as immunization strategies.

 

DO CLIN 807 Family Medicine I (8.0 Credit Hours):
Four weeks of training with a family physician where the full range of preventive and acute care of male and female patients of all ages is experienced. The role of preventive health care, triage and specialty referral process are included as an essential part of the experience.

 

DO CLIN 808 Family Medicine II (8.0 Credit Hours):

Four weeks of training with a family physician where the full range of preventive and acute care of male and female patients of all ages is experienced. The role of preventive health care, triage and specialty referral process are included as an essential part of the experience. Increases the consolidation of educational goals by providing continuity of environment and faculty found in Family Medicine 1.

 

DO SEL 816 Surgical Selective (8.0 Credit Hours):
Third-year Selective Physician Rotations are sites designated by the Office of Clinical Sciences. Each student will be assigned to one physician/physician group to follow and work with faculty throughout their schedule of clinical activity. All physicians will be approved clinical/adjunct faculty of the College of Osteopathic Medicine's Office of Clinical Sciences. The Office of Clinical Sciences will offer a pre-approved set of rotation sites from which the students may choose the required Selective Rotations. Site evaluations are collected and reviewed.

 

DO ELEC 825,826 Elective I, Elective II (8.0 Credit Hours):
Elective facilities and physicians may be selected by the medical students. All selections must be approved by the Department of Clinical Medicine, although there is no restriction on the location of such experiences. These experiences are meant to offer the opportunity to gain insight and experience into the vast array of personal medical education experiences particular to each student's interest. It may also be time used in exploring residency training opportunities. These preceptors may or may not hold a designated clinical/adjunct faculty appointment. Site and evaluations are collected and reviewed. An individual physician must be responsible for the student during this rotation.

 

Vacation/Independent Study (8.0 Credit Hours):
Students have two (2) four-week rotation blocks designated as vacation or independent study periods during the entirety of clerkship training. This time off is inclusive of study time for COMLEX Level 2. Students are strongly encouraged to schedule this time wisely. Time way be needed to repeat a failed rotation, time off for illness or other personal reasons. Time off during the OMS IV hear may be split to accommodate rotations that are out of sequence with LMU-DCOM dates or to schedule residency interviews.

 

Fourth Year Clinical Rotation Descriptions:

 

DO CLIN 903 Emergency Medicine (8.0 Credit Hours):
Four weeks of training in which students will be educated in the initial evaluation and stabilization of the acutely ill or traumatized patient. Education of the triage process at the entry into the Emergency Department is included in the experience.

 

DO CLIN 904 Rural/Underserved Outpatient Care (8.0 Credit Hours):
Four weeks of assignment to a physician representing the delivery of primary care Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine where the practice is located in an ambulatory clinic outside of a metropolitan statistical area. The student will be assigned to one physician to learn the problems that are unique to an area where higher level of consultative care and equipment or facilities are not available.

 

DO ELEC 924, 925, 926, 927, 928, 929 Elective I, Elective II, Elective III, Elective IV, Elective V, Elective VI (8.0 Credit Hours each):
Students will complete six (6) general four (4) week Elective rotations during OMS IV year. Elective facilities and physicians may be selected by the medical students. All selections must be approved by the Department of Clinical Medicine, although there is no restriction on the location of such experiences. These experiences are meant to offer the opportunity to gain insight and experience into the vast array of personal medical education experiences particular to each student's interest. DO ELEC 930 Rural/Underserved Elective (8.0 Credit Hours):

This four (4) week rotation will allow students to treat patients in a rural/underserved area. Elective facility and physician may be selected by each medical student. In order to fulfill the Rural/Underserved requirement of this rotation, the address of the rotation must be designated as "rural" or as "medically underserved" by Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA). This experience is meant to offer the opportunity to gain insight and experience into the challenges and rewards of treating patients in rural or medically underserved environments. The preceptor may or may not hold a designated clinical/adjunct faculty appointment. An individual physician must be responsible for the student during this rotation. Site evaluations are collected and reviewed.

 

DO ELE 931 Medical Elective (8.0 Credit Hours):
OMS IV Medical Elective rotation occurs at sites designated by the Office of Clinical Education. Each student will be assigned to one physician/physician group to follow and work with faculty throughout their schedule of clinical activity. All physicians will be approved by the College of Osteopathic Medicine's Office of Clinical Education. Site evaluations are collected and reviewed.
