🔒 What is Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor?

Your instructor may require you to use LockDown Browser to complete Quizzes in Canvas.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser that can be used during online exams. While the exam is in progress, it locks down the user's computer, restricting access to external resources, such as search engines or other applications.

Respondus Monitor is a fully automated, exam-proctoring solution that integrates with LockDown Browser. Students use a webcam to record themselves during an online exam. Afterward, flagged events and proctoring results are available to the instructor for further review.

What are the guidelines for online exams?

  • Select a location where you are comfortable having a video recording taken of yourself and your workspace environment. This area should be free of distractions and interruptions.
  • Turn off all other devices (tablets, phones, second computers) and place them outside of your reach.
  • Clear your desk or workspace of all external materials not permitted: books, papers, and other devices.
  • Before starting the test, determine how much time is available and ensure you have enough time to complete it.
  • Take the time to make sure your webcam is well situated before completing the webcam setup for Respondus Monitor. Avoid readjusting the tilt of the webcam or screen after the webcam setup is complete.
  • Ensure you are in a well-lit room, but avoid backlighting (ex., sitting with your back to a window).
  • Check your Wi-Fi connection. If your computer, Wi-Fi, or location is different than what it was when you previously ran your "Webcam Check" and "System & Network Check" in LockDown Browser, rerun these checks before the exam.
  • Remove any caps or hats with brims.
  • Ensure your computer is on a firm surface (ex., desk or table). Do not have your computer on your lap, bed, or any other unstable surface.

Tip: LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you cannot exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted.
