The Dr. Robert L. Kincaid Endowed Research Center promotes the scholarly study and public understanding of the influence created by the Judeo-Christian Ethic upon the era and the legacy of Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln Memorial University is proud to announce the establishment of the Dr. Robert L. Kincaid Endowed Research Center at Lincoln Memorial University. This Center is made possible through a generous endowment contribution.
Dr. Robert L. Kincaid served as President of Lincoln Memorial University from 1947 to 1958. His tremendous commitment to the expansion of the Abraham Lincoln collection continues to serve as an enduring legacy that inspires students, researchers and many visitors to campus throughout the year.
The Dr. Robert L. Kincaid Endowed Research Center will provide resources that will enable scholars and students the freedom to explore the role and importance of Judeo-Christian Ethics in the life of Lincoln, and in the larger political and social context in which he lived.
This support will also make possible the renovation of a gallery at the Abraham Lincoln Library& Museum, featuring items added to the collection during Dr. Kincaid’s presidency. In addition, the gift will support renovation of research facilities and ongoing scholarship, as well as additions to the Museum’s collections.

Dr. George C. Rable holds the Charles G. Summersell Chair in Southern history at the University of Alabama. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Bluffton College, his Masters and Doctoral degrees from Louisiana State University. Dr. Rable is the recipient of multiple scholarly awards and is a well-known writer of Civil War history. His “God’s Almost Chosen Peoples”: A Religious History of the American Civil War was the Museum’s book choice for those attending the Symposium, in April of 2015. His forthcoming Damn Yankees! Demonization and Defiance in the confederate South is eagerly awaited. Dr. Rable’s Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg! Received both the Lincoln Prize and the Douglas Southall Freeman History Award.
The title of this presentation is “God as General: Was There a Religious History of the “American Civil War?” Dr. Rable examines how Americans used religious faith to interpret the causes, course, and consequences of the war, Soldiers and civilians, ministers and politicians often discussed everything from Union to emancipation to particular battles in religious terms. He points out that “Themes of sin, providence and judgement are essential for understanding how Americans viewed the greatest crisis in American history.”
Guelzo is a distinguished lecturer for the Organization of American Historians and an acclaimed author, professor, and scholar. He has received numerous accolades for his contributions to historical research and scholarship, including The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation’s Bradley Prize (2018), The Lincoln Prize (2000, 2005, 2014), and The Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize in Military History (2014). His books, Gettysburg: The Last Invasion and Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America, are considered definitive works in the field. Over the years, he has held prestigious fellowships at institutions such as Princeton University, Harvard University, and the Claremont Institute, solidifying his reputation as a leading voice in American history.
