Impact America SpeakFirst High School Coach

Web Site:

http://impactamerica.com/corps/

Name of Company/Organization:

Impact America

Position Location:

Birmingham, AL

Job Description:

Organizational Description: Impact America engages students and recent college graduates to address community needs, empowering a generation through collaborative efforts to promote change in the communities we serve. The SpeakFirst initiative enriches the academic experience of gifted students from Birmingham's public high schools through participation in a competitive debate team. This highly collaborative initiative addresses a wide array of needs created by the deficit of opportunities and resources in their local communities, including one-on-one tutoring and mentoring, college admissions and financial aid guidance, standardized test preparation, youth development activities, and summer internships for the debaters. Since the inception of SpeakFirst in 2004, our students have competed in more than 100 tournaments and our upperclassmen consistently win approximately one-half of their debate rounds. SpeakFirst’s first ten graduating classes (39 students) have earned more than $4.9 million in college scholarships. SpeakFirst has also established incredible partnerships with The University of Alabama, UAB, and UAH. Each of these institutions has committed to providing, in perpetuity, full, four-year academic scholarships, including tuition and fees, to Birmingham school students who complete four years of SpeakFirst. Position Description: A SpeakFirst coach will work with Impact Alabama staff and the SpeakFirst coaching team to develop and implement debate curriculum for the SpeakFirst initiative. The SpeakFirst initiative brings together twenty exemplary high school students from Birmingham area schools that do not provide a formal debate structure into an all-star debate team that participates in tournaments in Alabama and across the Southeast. The team specializes in Public Forum Debate, which focuses on practical and philosophical questions about current domestic and foreign policy issues, and emphasizes the ability to debate and convey arguments about these issues persuasively to a judge. SpeakFirst coaches serve as advisors, discussion-leaders, and mentors who guide and improve the students’ research, argumentation, and speaking skills for each monthly topic. SpeakFirst coach responsibilities include managing and coaching practices three evenings per week, inclusive of lesson planning and thorough editing of student work; coordinating registration and participation in 8-10 weekend tournaments throughout the academic year; designing a summer debate orientation for new students; and organizing recruitment for the next class of students. In addition, you may manage volunteer tutors and mentors, supervise homework tutoring sessions and standardized test preparation, coordinate college admissions planning and summer internships for students, and design extracurricular events to expose the students to important cultural and historical attractions throughout Alabama. Responsibilities will also include collaborating with our SpeakFirst Middle School Coordinator to lead the SpeakFirst Middle School Debate League. This includes designing weekly workshops for middle school coaches in seven program schools, supervising instruction weekly at one of the program schools (Mondays, 3-5pm), and hosting four tournaments. SpeakFirst coaches are full-time AmeriCorps members who also serve with Impact Alabama’s other service initiatives: FocusFirst, SaveFirst, and CollegeFirst. SpeakFirst coaches will conduct 3-5 vision screenings for preschoolers, learn basic tax law to serve six hours per week at a SaveFirst tax site (February and March), and have the option to assist with the CollegeFirst Summer Advanced Placement Institute for high school students in Birmingham. Position currently available in Birmingham, AL.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will exhibit a commitment to improving the lives of economically disadvantaged families, a record of community service and/or civic engagement, leadership skills, the ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals (e.g., high school students, community partners), flexibility in a fast-paced environment, a positive attitude, strong research and analytical writing skills, and an aptitude for public speaking. Debate experience is strongly preferred but not required. Candidates for the SpeakFirst coach position with prior experience in education will be prioritized. A strong candidate will be able to speak to challenges and successes in curriculum design and daily lesson planning as well as to provide constructive feedback to students. SpeakFirst devotes four full-time coaches to twenty students to ensure a rigorous learning environment is maintained. In addition to participating in the creation of collaborative curriculum strategies with the SpeakFirst coaching team, coaches should be able to manage a substantial amount of independent work hours conducting research and preparing based on delegated tasks.

Impact America FocusFirst Coordinator 2018-19

Web Site:

http://impactamerica.com/corps/

Name of Company/Organization:

Impact America

Position Location:

Birmingham, AL; Memphis, TN; Greenville, SC; and Tallahassee, FL

Job Description:

Organizational Description- Many young adults tend to have negative perceptions of people living in poverty, people struggling to get by. Or, worse, they tend not to think much about them at all. As our communities become more homogeneous, it is easier to become isolated from many of the problems facing families and children today. Impact America provides an opportunity for recent graduates to engage with their communities in a meaningful way, broadening their perspectives and making a real impact. The FocusFirst Initiative provides a cost-effective direct response to the vision problems of children who live in urban and rural communities in Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Florida. Impact America AmeriCorps members, in collaboration with college students, provide free vision screenings to children, ages six months to five years, in Head Starts and daycares using technologically advanced digital screening cameras. All children failing the screenings receive free follow-up care through Sight Savers America. Over 3,200 college students at more than twenty colleges and universities throughout Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Florida have participated with FocusFirst. Over the last twelve years, these students have screened more than 350,000 children, with approximately 10% of the children failing the screenings and receiving free follow-up care as necessary. Position Description: FocusFirst Coordinators create and implement a comprehensive schedule for Impact America team members to conduct free vision screenings and implement many of the logistical details for the program. The Coordinators work closely with Impact America program staff, FocusFirst National Directors, and community partners to create a strategic plan for annual vision screenings, ensuring program targets are met efficiently and effectively. The FocusFirst Coordinators work with Head Start, Pre-K, and daycare administrators to provide information regarding the program, develop a master calendar for vision screenings, and inform staff of the benefits of early detection and referral for vision problems. Screenings take place during the academic year between August and May, and subsidized follow-up care is provided by local eye care providers in coordination with Sight Savers America. In collaboration with Impact America’s Volunteer Coordinator, FocusFirst Coordinators work with college administrators and professors to recruit and train volunteers from partnering campuses. After attending a short training session, student volunteers participate in direct service by conducting high-tech vision screenings under the supervision of Impact America Corps Members. FocusFirst Coordinators also recruit and train work study students from partnering campuses. Even when students are not available, Impact America’s team of AmeriCorps members is in the field every day conducting vision screenings. Upon completion of screenings, FocusFirst Coordinators ensure that the results of the screening are organized and processed before returning the results to the child care center. Coordinators conduct both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of each screening with an emphasis on the quality of the screenings, the number of children screened, the number that failed each screening, and specific reasons for failure. Coordinators will also communicate with Sight Savers America, the organization that coordinates follow-up care, to ensure that the children that failed the screening receive comprehensive follow-up care, as necessary. Positions are currently available in Birmingham, AL; Memphis, TN; Greenville, SC; and Tallahassee, FL.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will exhibit a commitment to improving the lives of economically disadvantaged families; a record of community service and/or civic engagement; demonstrated student leadership; the ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals, including college students, children, working families, and community-based partners; the ability to multi-task and exhibit flexibility in a fast-paced environment; a positive attitude; and organizational, planning, and management skills.
