Overview
Dr. Greg Brennan serves as the Associate Dean of Research and Basic Sciences at the Lincoln Memorial University–College of Veterinary Medicine at Orange Park (LMU-OPCVM). He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University, a PhD from the University of Washington, and completed postdoctoral training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Over the past 20 years, he has studied multiple human and animal viruses using traditional virology, evolution-based experiments, and advanced genetic sequencing to determine how viruses evade host defenses and cross species barriers. In addition to his research, he has established and managed high-containment laboratories, including one of the first supporting COVID-19 research, and mentored graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and veterinary trainees. Today, his focus is on fostering a collaborative research culture that integrates discovery with teaching and One Health priorities, preparing students to think critically and practice evidence-based medicine from day one.
Role at OPCVM
Dr. Brennan provides strategic leadership for research initiatives and basic science education at OPCVM. He supports faculty research development, fosters collaboration, secures funding, and oversees compliance with research standards while guiding basic sciences curriculum and faculty management.
Research Focus
Dr. Brennan uses experimental evolution to model how viruses adapt to inhibit host immune responses and infect new species. This work has shown that gene amplification of a weak viral antagonist may broadly increase viral replication in multiple, otherwise resistant species. This amplification can also act as a “molecular foothold” to enable further species-specific adaptations necessary for efficient replication in new hosts. Recently, his research interests have expanded to include the ethics and use of generative artificial intelligence to support curriculum development.
