Harrogate, Tennessee, March 11, 2017— The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Paul V. Hamilton School of Art, Humanities and Social Sciences will host Sgt. Tim Cotton of the Bangor Maine Police Department on Wednesday, March 15.
The words circling the Bangor, Maine, police department shield read, “integrity, professionalism, honor, pride and valor.” Humor could have easily made the list.
Since Tim Cotton took over the police department’s Facebook page in 2014, the page and Cotton’s humorous approach to law enforcement has become a viral sensation. The department has more than five times the number of followers than Bangor actually has residents, and Cotton’s insights on law enforcement, the importance of kindness and one his sense of community has been read and shared the world over.
Cotton’s posts, which have been featured in media reports on national media including The Washington Post, New York Daily News, Boston.com and NPR’s Morning Edition, can range from “intentionally boring road condition reports” to comedic interpretations of emergency calls the department receives to photos featuring the department’s beloved Duck of Justice (DOJ) mascot. Cotton writes the posts in a tongue-in-cheek manner, intentionally injecting humor while connecting with his readers.
Cotton will speak to criminal justice classes, be a guest on the school’s American Culture: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences radio show and participate in question and answer session during his visit. His radio appearance can be heard on The Gap, 91.3 FM, in Harrogate, Tennessee, and the public question and answer session will be held at 5 p.m. in the Arnold Auditorium of the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum.
