LMU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CHAPTER ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP TO HONOR MEMORY OF CLAIBORNE COUNTY EDUCATOR

Harrogate, Tennessee, April 26, 2016— The Claiborne County Chapter of the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Alumni Association has established the Janet S. Barnard Memorial Scholarship to be awarded annually to a graduating senior from Claiborne High.

Barnard, a 1973 graduate of LMU, was a lifelong educator who served Claiborne County schools as a teacher, principal and curriculum supervisor for 38 years. Barnard is survived by her husband, Lynn, who is also an educator in Claiborne County, and their daughter, Danielle, who is a doctor practicing general surgery and trauma surgery in Memphis. Barnard’s passion in education was reading. She mentored many Claiborne County teachers and was beloved for how freely she gave her time, talent and expertise to her colleagues.

“Janet meant the world to the teachers of Claiborne County,” said Claiborne County Alumni Chapter President Sam McCollough. “When she passed, we knew that establishing a scholarship that would allow Claiborne High School students to further their educations was a fitting tribute. This scholarship is exactly how she would have wanted her legacy to continue, especially at her alma mater.”

Sarah Blankenship, of New Tazewell, Tennessee, who will enter LMU as a freshman in August, was awarded the inaugural scholarship during LMU’s annual Student Awards and Recognition Program. Blankenship will graduate from Claiborne High School in May. Lynn Barnard was on hand for the presentation along with LMU Director of Alumni Services Sheliah Cosby.
