Harrogate, Tennessee, July 1, 2018—Remote Area Medical (RAM) rolled onto the campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, Friday morning. Seventy-two hours and $401,050 worth of medical, dental and vision services later, they left having made an impact on 595 patients. The good works included veterinary services for 106 pets of the human patients.
LMU served as the community host, opening up the Tex Turner Arena to RAM. More than twenty dental chairs covered half the arena floor while indoor batting cages were converted to optical lanes for vision testing and the athletic training room was converted to medical exam rooms. Three hundred and twelve volunteers came together to staff the human services including LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine students, dental students from the University of Buffalo, Southern College of Optometry students and LMU faculty, staff and students. In addition to a range of health screenings, LMU-DCOM students and faculty also performed osteopathic manipulative medicine on patients and practitioners, alike.
The dental services were most in demand, with 323 patients having dental encounters. Two hundred and fifty three patients received vision services and 271 pairs of glasses were made on site. In the medical area, 178 people were treated.
In the Schenck Center adjacent to Tex Turner Arena, the LMU Veterinary Health Science and Veterinary Medical Technology program teamed with RAM and Red Rover to provide free spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and microchipping while the pets’ humans were being treated in the Arena. Nearly 60 additional volunteers served in the veterinary area.
LMU hosted its first RAM clinic in 2006, since then the two organizations have partnered to deliver nearly $2 million worth of services to 5,501 people. Additionally, 1,641 animals have been spayed or neutered during RAM events at LMU. For more information about RAM, go to www.RAMusa.org.
