Harrogate, Tennessee, May 11, 2017— Gage Smith of Sevierville, Tennessee, will receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) in the fall.
Smith is among hundreds of students transferring to LMU; however, he is just one of three students from area community colleges selected to receive full-tuition scholarships. The Trustees Transfer Scholarship is a special award presented by LMU to recipients who are selected by the administration of their community college based on leadership and character.
“Our community college partnerships are vitally important to the University,” said Conrad Daniels, director of community college relations and veteran services at LMU. “Community Colleges play a tremendous role in educating our workforce, and we are excited to empower students to continue to advance their learning and earning potential.”
Smith was selected by officials at Walters State Community College (WSCC) based on his academic performance, leadership activities and desire to attend LMU. He was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa honors society and was active in the science and medicine club, adventure club and the student ambassadors program.
Smith plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology on the pre-med track at LMU. While attending Seymour High School, he was dually-enrolled at Walters State with aspirations to attend pharmacy school. A job shadowing opportunity with a pharmacist in a hospital changed his mind.
“I was shadowing in the intensive care unit and found myself more interested in what the doctors and nurses were doing than the pharmacist,” Smith said. “I look forward to gaining more hands on experience in medicine at LMU.”
In addition to WSCC, LMU will be awarding scholarships to students from Mountain Empire Community College and Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. The LMU Trustee Transfer Scholarships have been awarded since 2010.
