LMU Center for the Arts featuring 'Relational Attunement' Exhibition

The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Art Program is hosting an art exhibition, “Relational Attunement,” by Assistant Professor of Art Risa Hricovsky. The exhibit is on display at the LMU Center for the Arts in Cumberland Gap (703 Brooklyn St.) will remain on display through Feb. 14.A reception for the artist is set for Feb. 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

In this exhibition, Hricovsky takes signifiers of traditional painting, such as stretcher bars, collage, and paint, and pairs them with untraditional materials such as pipe cleaners, contact paper, and porcelain. Although the work consists of wall pieces and installations, each piece harmonizes and acts as a container for visual movement. These pieces work through material hierarchies by using lower-level materials and transcending the perceived barriers of the material. The integration of the differing materials causes the viewer to question artificial boundaries imposed on each material, as well as the larger impact of the material beyond the aesthetic. In this way, Hricovsky playfully distorts the viewer's perception by creating visually pleasing work from tawdry materials, transporting the materials from the oblivious to the conspicuous.
