Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum Gets Book Donation

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum (ALLM) received a book donation from Tennesseans for Student Success to help fill the future Lincoln Learning Lab once renovations are complete.

ALLM received the gift after promoting TriStar Reads - a summer program to encourage K-12 students to spend at least 20 minutes each day reading - and encouraged the creation of a team of local children readers.

“When the Museum reopens, the Lincoln Learning Lab will be one of many new features,” said Natalie Sweet, ALLM Program Coordinator. “It will include a children’s library and workspace for age appropriate hands-on activities. We are looking forward to having upgraded facilities for public engagement and this donation is much appreciated.”

Studies show that summer reading is critical to help students stay sharp for the upcoming school year. Students who do not read during the summer can quickly fall behind, losing between one and three months of learning. According to the National Summer Learning Association, the Summer Slide is “one of the most significant causes of the achievement gap between lower and higher income youth and one of the strongest contributors to the high school dropout rate.” Worse, the “Summer Slide” is cumulative, meaning learning losses build up each year.  For more information visit the website www.tristarreads.com/
