JFWA Faculty Friday Profile: Curtis Massengill
Frank White Academy’s (JFWA) Curtis Massengill teaches middle school and high school English, as well as drama. He has also taught journalism and research writing. He is a 2001 graduate of the Academy and has taught at JFWA full time for eight years.
Education and Career Background:
I attended East Tennessee State University for my undergraduate and master's programs and obtained my teaching certification via Carson-Newman University. After college, I went into teaching at JFWA almost immediately, and have rarely strayed far since.
In terms of my teaching philosophy, I see myself as a storyteller - and part of that is showing my students what goes into really good stories. Even for those of us who don’t follow an education in English or academia, we all tell tales throughout our lives, because that’s how we communicate. I can only hope to teach my students how to be better at it.
As for my personal life, I am fond of reading, writing fiction (mostly sci fi and fantasy), and kayaking.
