LMU Grad Named 2020 National Principal of the Year

Kerensa Wing

Collins Hill High School Principal Kerensa Wing was named the 2020 National Principal of The Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Wing earned an educational specialist degree from the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Carter and Moyers School of Education in 2001. She is the top administrator at Collins Hill High School in north Georgia. The school, located near Suwanee, Georgia, has over 3,000 students and is a part of the Gwinnett County School system.

In honoring Wing, NASSP officials cited her efforts to hire, train and retain high-quality teachers who are student-focused and reflect the student population. A collaborative, professional learning community, cultural competency training and dedicated advisement time help teachers build strong connections with both students and other educators in a safe and nurturing environment. With this support, Collins Hill students soar academically with opportunities to pursue advanced curriculum offerings and take part in project-based learning.

A 30-year educator, Wing was honored as the 2019 Georgia Principal of the Year. She first joined Gwinnett County in 1990 as a social studies teacher at Shiloh and Collins Hill High Schools. In 2002, Wing became an assistant principal at Collins Hill, a position she held until she was named as principal of Lainer High School in 2010. She returned to Collins Hill as principal in 2014.

Wing earned a bachelor’s degree in history and education from Oglethorpe University. She earned a master’s degree from Georgia State University prior to attending LMU.

“Scores of LMU-trained educators are honored every year as teachers or administrators of the year,” said Dr. Sylvia Lynch, dean of the LMU Carter and Moyers School of Education. “I am so proud of our alumni who so clearly embody the mission of LMU. They are proving themselves to be outstanding educators, dedicated to serving in schools across Appalachia and beyond. I am especially proud to congratulate Kerensa Wing on such a prestigious honor.”
