LMU-DCOM Welcomes Class of 2024 to Harrogate and Knoxville
Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) welcomed 393 future doctors into the class of 2024 on Saturday, Aug. 1 for orientation. 243 students started their osteopathic medical education on the main campus in Harrogate, and 150 students began classes at LMU-Knoxville. Classes began online Monday, Aug. 3 with labs conducted in-person, and efforts being made for social distancing.
Since its founding in 2007, LMU-DCOM has had a rigorous and competitive application process. This year, LMU-DCOM received 3,964 completed applications for the class of 2024, a 15% increase from the previous year.
“Beginning medical school in the midst of a global pandemic presents the class of 2024 with challenges that no other class has had to experience before. These future doctors have already demonstrated their enthusiasm and passion for learning, as well as their dedication and flexibility with ever-changing circumstances,” LMU-DCOM Dean Brian A. Kessler said. “Every year I am impressed by the caliber of students that enter our program, and the class of 2024 is no exception.”
LMU-DCOM has often attracted an eclectic group of students with a variety of talents and hobbies. The entering class includes musicians, pianists, college athletes, marathon runners, dancers, singers, artists, nurses, former EMTs and paramedics, firefighters, military veterans, and a professional athlete.
Today, LMU-DCOM is home to more medical students than any other university in Tennessee and is the only osteopathic medicine program in the state. In meeting its goal to serve the Appalachian region and beyond, LMU-DCOM’s class of 2024 includes 165 students from the immediate tri-state region of Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. The remaining class members come from all over the United States. The class of 2024 is 52 percent female and 47 percent male and the average age is 24 with ages ranging from the youngest student at 19 years of age to the oldest student at 58 years of age.
