Farm and Family Day Offered Community a Chance to Learn More about Animal Health
The Lee County Extension Office in conjunction with Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) held a Farm and Family Day Sept. 28, 2019 at the DeBusk Veterinary Teaching Center in Ewing, Virginia. Approximately 600 people attended the event which included farm equipment and educational displays, demonstrations and booths by local businesses and community and government agencies.
LMU students, faculty and staff from various programs around the campus provided hands-on educational activities for children. These activities included a pet adoption simulation for youth in which children were able to adopt a plush toy pet, as well as soap making, bouncy houses, and a booth to make horseshoe dream catchers. LMU-CVM offered tours of the DVTC facilities and anatomy lab guided by student volunteers. During the event, the Cumberland Gap Volunteer Fire Department, led completely by students from the LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, gave a small animal rescue demonstration.
“Farm and Family Day gives the community the opportunity to see the advancements of LMU’s College of Veterinary Medicine as well as learn about animal health and other aspects of rural life,” said Dr. Karen Gruszynski, assistant professor of epidemiology for LMU-CVM. “Through this event, the community has become aware of many issues and topics through the years related to veterinary medicine, and the event has also served to help the community know that they are a part of LMU.”
