Velasquez honored by Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association
Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Associate Professor and Chair of Sport and Exercise Science Benito Velasquez was recognized by the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association (SEATA) as the 2021 winner of the Education/Administration Award.
The Educational/Administration Award is given to a member that is committed to teaching athletic training skills and functioning in a leadership capacity at an institution. Velasquez was recognized during a SEATA Awards Virtual Meeting on March 6.
“I am humbled and honored to receive this award especially looking at the list of previous awardees,” said Velasquez. “I was fortunate to have great athletic training education mentors, and very proud to follow in the footsteps of those who have lead the way in athletic training education.”
Velasquez is the chair for the LMU Department of Sport and Exercise Science and the program director for the CAATE accredited Athletic Training Program at LMU which graduated its last students in May 2020. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and his doctorate from Middle Tennessee State University. Velasquez is nationally certified through the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers and is a licensed athletic trainer through the Tennessee Board of Athletic Trainers. He is also licensed in Texas and Mississippi.
Velasquez has been honored by the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Association last year with the Jerry Robertson Educator Award and was also recipient of the 2016 National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Service Award and the 2014 NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
SEATA is a regional organization representing athletic trainers in the states of Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky and Louisiana. Velasquez has served with SEATA, the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association, and the National Athletic Trainers Association. He has written numerous articles on athletic training and sports medicine subjects, including case studies, legal issues that impact athletic trainers and education of the athletic training student.
