Four students at Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine at Orange Park (LMU-OPCVM) have been selected to receive the Appalachian Academic Achievement Scholarship, an award that recognizes academic excellence and a connection to the region at the heart of the university's mission.
For students pursuing a veterinary degree, the scholarship represents more than financial support. The scholarship recognizes students from the Appalachian region whose academic achievements and future goals reflect LMU's longstanding commitment to serving Appalachia. It is an investment in future veterinarians who understand the unique needs of rural communities and are prepared to make a meaningful impact through their profession.
Each recipient will receive $20,000 over four years, provided they maintain academic eligibility throughout the program.
“Lincoln Memorial University’s historical mission is deeply rooted in serving Appalachia,” said Dr. Kimberly Carney, Dean of LMU-OPCVM. “While our university has expanded its reach well beyond the region, our commitment to Appalachian communities remains strong. We are especially proud to welcome students from Appalachia to our College of Veterinary Medicine at Orange Park in Florida and to support their educational journeys through these scholarships. These students have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and a commitment to making a meaningful difference through veterinary medicine. We look forward to the impact they will have on the animals, producers, and communities they serve.”
This year, four veterinary students were selected for the scholarship based on their academic achievement, connection to the Appalachian region and potential to contribute to the health and well-being of their communities through veterinary medicine.
For many students from Appalachia, veterinary medicine is deeply personal. Growing up in rural communities often provides firsthand experience with the role veterinarians play in supporting animal health, agriculture and local economies. Through scholarships such as this one, LMU seeks to remove barriers to professional education while preparing graduates to meet the needs of the communities they call home.
As the demand for veterinarians continues to grow in many rural areas, LMU remains committed to developing compassionate, highly trained professionals who are prepared to make a difference across Appalachia and beyond.
