Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) celebrated a legacy of leadership, service and philanthropy as community leader and banking executive Eleanor Yoakum was named the recipient of the 2026 Cynthia L. Whitt Women of Service Award during the annual Women of Service Fashion Show at Tex Turner Arena.
The award recognizes individuals whose lifelong dedication to service has strengthened communities and inspired future generations. Presenting the award was Cindy Whitt, who co-founded Women of Service with the late Lynn Duncan, and currently serve as advisor to the organization.
Yoakum, chairman of the board of First Century Bank, has been a steadfast supporter of both LMU and the Women of Service initiative for many years. Throughout her distinguished career, she has provided visionary leadership in banking while championing education, economic development and community growth across Tennessee.
"Eleanor exemplifies the very spirit of the Women of Service Award," Whitt said during the presentation. "Her influence extends far beyond professional success. Through her unwavering commitment to others, she has strengthened communities, supported education, improved healthcare and served as a mentor and role model for countless individuals."
Over decades of service, Yoakum has held leadership roles with numerous organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for Tennesseans. Her extensive involvement includes service with the United Way, East Tennessee Historical Society, Tennessee State Museum Commission, Claiborne County Hospital Board, Tennessee Federation of Women's Clubs, American Red Cross blood drives and Heart Fund campaigns. She has also contributed her leadership to Heritage Christian Academy, Walters State Community College, East Tennessee State University and her local United Methodist Church, where she chaired the Finance Committee.
Known for her humility and commitment to serving others, Yoakum's impact has been felt throughout Claiborne County and across the state.
"She has never sought recognition for her service," Whitt said. "Instead, she has quietly and consistently invested in the success of others, strengthening organizations, communities and opportunities for future generations. Her lifetime commitment to faith, family and service has left an enduring legacy."
Whitt revealed that, through the efforts of Yoakum's family and friends, the Eleanor Yoakum Endowed Scholarship has been established at LMU.
"This scholarship is yet another commitment to the youth of Claiborne County," Whitt said. "It reflects Eleanor's lifelong belief in creating opportunities for future generations and ensuring that young people have access to education and success."
