Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) student Connor Mesler is making his mark in the scientific community as the first author of a peer-reviewed research publication detailing a previously undocumented parasitic infection in birds.
A member of the LMU-CVM Class of 2027, Mesler has spent more than three years conducting research in the laboratory of Dr. Barbara Shock, building on the foundation he established while earning his Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Health Science from LMU in 2023.
The interdisciplinary study brings together veterinary pathologists, clinicians, diagnosticians and research scientists to document a novel parasite-linked disease in an avian species. The discovery expands understanding of wildlife health and highlights the importance of the One Health approach, which recognizes the connection between animal, human and environmental health.
"Connor's achievement reflects the outstanding mentorship and collaborative research culture at LMU," said Shock, chair of LMU's Department of Biology and Chemistry and program director for Conservation Biology. "His work demonstrates how hands-on research experiences can help students make meaningful contributions to science early in their careers."
Mesler began conducting One Health research as an undergraduate under Shock's mentorship and has continued that work throughout veterinary school. His first-author publication represents a significant milestone for an emerging scientist and showcases the real-world research opportunities available to LMU students.
The project also highlights the ongoing partnership between LMU's College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Mathematics, Sciences, and Health Professions, fostering innovation through cross-disciplinary collaboration.
