Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will transform the way future veterinarians learn diagnostic imaging through a new Veterinary Ultrasonography Education Initiative made possible by a $500,000 gift from the Yarbrough Family Foundation. The initiative will establish a fully integrated diagnostic training environment within the Richard A. Gillespie College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM), giving every student hands-on experience with advanced ultrasound technology before entering clinical practice.
As the largest veterinary school in the United States, LMU-CVM has both the opportunity and the responsibility to help shape the future of veterinary education. Modern veterinary medicine increasingly depends on advanced diagnostic imaging, yet many veterinary students receive only limited exposure to ultrasonography before entering practice. This initiative reflects LMU-CVM's commitment to integrating point-of-care diagnostic imaging throughout the curriculum, ensuring every student develops competency in day-one imaging skills before graduation.
The initiative establishes a fully integrated diagnostic training environment featuring 13 advanced, high-resolution ultrasound imaging systems. Rather than limiting access to imaging equipment or reserving ultrasonography for advanced clinical experiences, every LMU-CVM student will have repeated opportunities to build proficiency throughout their education. The result is a learning environment that expands hands-on clinical training, strengthens competency and confidence, and closes a critical gap in modern veterinary instruction.

Unlike traditional instructional models where ultrasound exposure may be limited, LMU-CVM is making diagnostic imaging an integral part of the student experience from the classroom through clinical training. Students will graduate with meaningful experience using point-of-care diagnostic imaging technologies, developing proficiency through repeated hands-on learning rather than isolated instruction before entering practice.
The initiative's impact extends well beyond student education. It will promote faculty innovation, strengthen clinical collaboration and create continuing education opportunities for practicing veterinarians. More importantly, it establishes a lasting foundation for innovation that will benefit the College, the veterinary profession and future generations of LMU students for years to come.
