The Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law (LMU Law) has established the Martha J. Yoakum Endowed Scholarship, an endowed fund that will support students from rural Tennessee pursuing a legal education while honoring the legacy of longtime public defender Martha J. Yoakum.
Created by Eleanor McMurray of Knoxville in memory of her late mother, the scholarship reflects Yoakum's lifelong commitment to expanding access to justice and creating opportunities for those who might otherwise believe a legal career is out of reach. The scholarship also aligns with LMU Law's mission of preparing attorneys to serve rural communities throughout the region. "Nearly 75% of our graduates practice in Appalachia, and approximately 25% of our graduates practice in a rural TN county," said Dean of LMU Law Matt Lyon.
An East Tennessee native, Yoakum was elected district public defender for Tennessee's Eighth Judicial District in 1990 and served in that role for 22 years. Throughout her career, she believed the law should apply equally regardless of wealth, access or power. Recognizing shortcomings within the criminal justice system, she worked to ensure every person accused of a crime received fair representation and the opportunity to be heard.
Beyond the courtroom, Yoakum was dedicated to mentoring future generations. She coached mock trial at Claiborne County High School for many years, introducing students to trial advocacy and encouraging them to pursue careers in law. Her influence extended well beyond competition, with former students crediting her encouragement as the reason they believed law school was possible.
McMurray said those experiences helped inspire the scholarship's focus on students from rural Tennessee.
"That's a sentiment you hear a lot in small towns," McMurray said. "Smart, talented, dedicated individuals are being left out of the profession simply because they don't know how to find their way to it. Maybe they don't know the path, don't think they have the money or time, or maybe they just don't even see it as a real possibility for them. The system needs those people. It needs people that have struggled, that haven't been listened to, that have been marginalized."
Yoakum also took great pride in Claiborne County, appreciating both its rich history and the resilience of its people. While she recognized the economic and educational challenges many rural communities face, she believed those communities were filled with individuals whose talents deserved greater opportunity.
Shortly after LMU Duncan School of Law opened, McMurray and her mother visited the campus together. McMurray said Yoakum immediately recognized the school's potential to make legal education more accessible for students facing financial, geographic and personal barriers, a mission that closely aligned with her own belief that the legal profession should be open to everyone.
Reflecting on what the scholarship would have meant to her mother, McMurray said its greatest impact lies in giving students the confidence to pursue their ambitions.
"I think Mom would be the proudest of being able to help give someone the courage to chase their dreams," McMurray said. "Being an attorney gave her purpose, passion and independence. She saw so many people in her communities that had passion and dedication but didn't believe this path was open to them. For Mom, being able to light the way for those people would be a fulfilled dream. In creating this scholarship, I knew it had to be with LMU."
The Martha J. Yoakum Endowed Scholarship will help ensure students from rural Tennessee have access to the opportunities and support needed to pursue a legal education. Through the scholarship, Yoakum's legacy of service, justice and expanding opportunity will continue to inspire future generations of LMU Duncan School of Law students.
