Savannah Campbell, associate professor of psychology at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will lead a group of students to London as part of a study abroad course designed to provide an international perspective on psychology and help students develop personal and professional skills.
Campbell will mentor five students during the trip from May 30 through June 13. The course will be facilitated through the Cooperative Consortium for Study Abroad (CCSA), with three participants from LMU.
The class will allow students to earn academic credit while studying psychological concepts through real-world experiences. Campbell’s preparation for the course has included identifying historical sites and educational activities that illustrate psychological theory through a global lens.
“In my opinion, this experience helps broaden students’ horizons,” Campbell said. “Many of them have never traveled outside of Tennessee, much less outside the country. This allows them to see different cultures and gain new experiences while learning.”
During the two-week program, students will observe diverse environments and interact with different cultures to better understand how societal factors influence human behavior.
The trip will also help students develop career-ready skills such as adaptability, communication and confidence through navigating an international city.
“I hope students learn not only the course material but also discover what they’re capable of,” Campbell said. “They get to explore themselves while learning how to handle new situations and environments.”
Campbell said opportunities like this highlight the benefits of the LMU experience.
“Even though LMU is a small university, it has a big impact and a big heart,” she said. “Programs like this show what our students are capable of and the unique opportunities LMU provides.”
