Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Professor of Philosophy and Ethics and Assistant Dean of the Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS), Dr. Steven Cowan, released two books in April that explore philosophical perspectives on ethics, religion and life after death.
Problems in Applied Ethics: An Introduction to Contemporary Debates is a collection of essays featuring multiple scholars. Each chapter examines critical modern issues, including gun control, abortion and human genome editing.
Life After Death: Four Views brought together Cowan and four scholars who examined differing perspectives on the afterlife. Each contributor presented and defended a particular viewpoint while engaging with alternative perspectives.
“I wanted to teach a class on these topics and have a book that was up to date,” said Cowan.
Cowan said he was not satisfied with the current textbooks and created the books to better align with his course. He also said he hopes readers will consider a range of perspectives on complex issues.
“For the Life After Death book, we wanted to address the fear many people have about death, ask questions about it and look for evidence regarding the different opinions the scholars and I have on life after death,” Cowan said.
Both books are available for purchase on Amazon. For more information, contact Cowan at steven.cowan@lmunet.edu.
