LMU Social Work Department Celebrates Student Achievements

Phi Alpha

The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Department of Social Work hosted the 27th Eta Nu Chapter of the Phi Alpha Honor Society induction ceremony on April 13, recognizing academic excellence and announcing the Outstanding Social Work Student of the Year awards.

Phi Alpha is a national honor society that recognizes social work students at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels who demonstrate high academic achievement and commitment to humanitarian values. LMU’s Eta Nu Chapter was established in 1998 and with the 2026 inductees has welcomed a total of 109 students and alumni.

Induction into Phi Alpha requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher and a social work GPA of 3.57 or higher. This year’s inductees include seniors Alexander Williams and Emily Mirabile, along with juniors Siddalee Figgins, Lacey Hand, Elisabeth Grygiel, and Mary Eunice.

“It is an honor to recognize these outstanding students who lead with compassion and purpose,” said Dr. Kristy Lee, Department of Social Work program director. “Their dedication to service and advocacy reflects the very best of the social work profession and the meaningful difference they are already making in the lives of others.”

Among the inductees was junior Elisabeth Grygiel, who said the honor represents more than academic achievement.

“Being inducted into Phi Alpha is a meaningful milestone because it represents the hard work and integrity required in this field,” Grygiel said. “To me, the social work program is about more than just academics. Professor Lee and the rest of the faculty have made me feel like I am truly part of something larger. I am grateful for a community that shares my passion for this profession and emphasizes showing up for others with both accountability and heart.”

The ceremony also highlighted the Outstanding Social Work Student of the Year Awards, which recognize excellence in academics, service, leadership, and professional potential. Recipients are selected by social work faculty based on classroom performance, field education, and contributions to the department, university, and community.

Emily Mirabile and Samuel Kennedy were named the 2026 recipients of the award. They represent the 49th and 50th students to receive this honor since the award was established during the 1985–86 academic year. Faculty noted that both students exemplify leadership, initiative, and a deep commitment to serving others.

“The social work program has given me the tools to not only further my education but also to serve those who are most vulnerable in our communities,” Kennedy said. “While Phi Alpha is a recognition of our academic achievements, the real measure of success will be seen in our future workplaces, careers, and continuing education.”

LMU's Social Work program is committed to preparing competent, compassionate professionals equipped to serve individuals, families, and communities, particularly in rural and underserved regions. Through rigorous academics, extensive field education, and an emphasis on real-world practice, graduates are prepared to make an immediate and meaningful impact.
