LMU History Major Awarded Prestigious Scholarship

Katie Fultz

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) student Katie Fultz was honored at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., as the recipient of the James Alan Simmons History Scholarship during the annual national commemoration of President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.

Fultz, a history major from New Tazewell, Tennessee, was selected for the prestigious scholarship in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement, dedication to the study of history, and embodiment of the values central to LMU’s mission. The scholarship, presented in partnership with the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), recognizes an exceptional LMU student each year who demonstrates a strong commitment to historical scholarship and leadership.

“History has meant a great deal to me since an early age as it was a shared interest between me and my papaw,” said Fultz. “This award is such an honor to receive, and I am so thankful I was given the opportunity to participate in many of the celebrations. I am thankful for my professors and their support. I am also very grateful to Captain Simmons for his generosity and the hospitality of all those involved in making my trip to Washington, D.C. so memorable.”

Receiving the award at the Lincoln Memorial carries special significance for LMU students, as the University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln. The annual ceremony brings together national organizations and representatives to honor Lincoln’s legacy and those who continue to advance his ideals through education and service.

Fultz’s academic interests include history, political science, and criminal justice. She is a member of the Lincoln Memorial University softball team and is actively involved in her church. After graduation, she plans to attend law school and pursue a career as an attorney.

In addition to the ceremony, members of LMU’s Alumni Association traveled to Washington, D.C., for the annual commemoration weekend, connecting with alumni and participating in events honoring Lincoln’s enduring legacy.

For Fultz, the experience marked both a personal and academic milestone.

“This experience has been one that I will never forget, and I am so glad that I got to include my dad on the trip. My parents are so important to me, and I couldn't succeed in my academic career without them. I am so honored that I got to be part of the Abraham Lincoln birthday celebration and had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people.”
