The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Office of Admissions is welcoming 10th-grade students from Knox County Schools’ 865 Academies to campus for a series of career-focused visits designed to introduce academic programs and professional pathways across the university.
Throughout the year, students visit campus to explore programs aligned with their academic focus areas, including health science, veterinary science, business, education and engineering. Coordinated by Dr. Lindsay Haywood, assistant vice president for enrollment, and the admissions team, each visit included guided tours, faculty interaction and hands-on exposure to classrooms, laboratories and clinical training spaces.
“Hosting students from Knox County’s 865 Academies is an exciting opportunity for LMU to connect young learners with meaningful academic and career pathways,” said Haywood. “By welcoming them into our state-of-the-art facilities and introducing them to our dedicated faculty and staff, we’re able to showcase the innovative learning environments and personalized support that define the LMU experience. We’re proud to partner with local schools to support students as they take the next steps toward higher education and lifelong success.”
The 865 Academies model, which includes 14 high schools across Knox County, organizes students into career-themed learning communities that align coursework with future goals. Visiting LMU allowed students to see how those pathways can extend into undergraduate and graduate education.
As a comprehensive university serving the region, LMU offers programs across multiple campuses, including locations in Knoxville dedicated to medical, dental, and law, among others. By welcoming students into active learning environments, the university provides a closer look at the scope of opportunities available within East Tennessee.
Educators say the experience allows students to connect their interests with tangible next steps.
“I believe the field trip to LMU was a wonderful opportunity for the kids to explore a postsecondary institution aligned with their goals,” said a teacher from Halls High School. “This trip allowed the students to see what their classes may look like after their undergraduate degrees. It put them in these immersive spaces, and they got to explore from start to finish what a graduate degree in this field would look like.”
Students describe the visits as both informative and motivating.
“The LMU field trip was very educational and beneficial for anyone interested in the veterinary sciences pathway,” said a Halls High School student. “Seeing options for college close to home and experiencing what the schooling looks like helped me better understand the path to that career.”
Additional visits are planned as LMU continues to engage Knox County students through on-campus experiences.
