Dr. Jason Fowler, a professor of biochemistry at the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) College of Mathematics, Sciences, and Health Professions, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Tennessee Academy of Science (TAS) Distinguished College/University Teacher Award.
At LMU, Fowler is widely known for reimagining how complex biological and biochemical concepts are taught. In 2014, he was an early adopter of recording and sharing full-course lectures for student use, a practice that later expanded across campus.
Since 2021, Fowler’s research has focused on narrative-based learning in biology education, with findings presented at national conferences, including the Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research (SABER) and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). His studies show that storytelling can help students better grasp difficult concepts and feel more connected to the material.
More recently, he became one of the first LMU faculty members to integrate trained, course-specific AI teaching assistants into his classes. Designed to provide students with individualized academic support, reinforce course content and encourage confidence in learning complex material. Fowler also developed an AI use policy now shared as a model across the university and holds an Auburn University certification in artificial intelligence in higher education.
“Science education shouldn’t feel like a gatekeeping system,” said Fowler. “I see artificial intelligence as a force for good in the classroom, and one that helps spark curiosity, deepen engagement, and give students the support they need to keep going. AI isn’t about replacing teachers; it’s about extending guidance and access beyond the classroom. When students feel seen, supported, and confident, they’re far more willing to take on difficult material and discover that science is a place where they belong.”
Beyond his academic achievements, Fowler is well-regarded for his rapport with students and colleagues. Students frequently describe his courses as engaging, approachable and challenging in the best way, crediting his teaching with helping them master difficult material and gain confidence in biology and biochemistry.
“Dr. Fowler’s approach to teaching reflects both innovation and heart,” said Dr. Adam Rollins, executive dean of the College of Mathematics, Sciences, and Health Professions. “He continually finds new ways to make challenging material accessible while building students’ confidence. This award is a testament to his dedication and impact.”
The Tennessee Academy of Science Distinguished College/University Teacher Award honors faculty members whose teaching excellence and educational leadership make a lasting impact on students and the scientific community. Fowler’s selection reflects both his instructional achievements and the strong regard in which he is held by students and peers alike.
