Lincoln Memorial University-College of Dental Medicine (LMU-CDM) faculty member Dr. Shaza Mardini published an article in the September 2025 special issue of Seminars in Orthodontics (Vol. 31, Issue 4). The edition, titled Orthodontics & Overall Health: A Unified Approach to Patient Care, focuses on the connection between orthodontic treatment and overall health.
Mardini’s article, “Imaging in Orthodontics: Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography to Identify Growth Disturbances Affecting the Airway, Temporomandibular Joints and Systemic Health,” explores how cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) can be used to detect and monitor craniofacial growth disturbances that may affect a patient’s health.
CBCT, a three-dimensional imaging technique adopted by the dental profession in the early 2000s, has transformed how practitioners view anatomy, pathology and treatment planning. The technology enables clinicians to analyze the maxillofacial complex in all three planes, aiding in the early detection of deviations from normal growth and potential issues involving the temporomandibular joints and airway.
“I was honored to be asked by editors Dr. Audrey Yoon and Dr. Carlos Flores-Mir to participate in this edition of Seminars in Orthodontics,” Mardini said. “It is a passion of mine to shed light on the effects of changes in craniofacial growth on the overall health of our patients.”
