Faculty Publish First-Ever Guide to Freshwater Sponges in Tennessee

Kunigelis and Copeland

A retired Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) biology professor and current professor of physiology have co-authored a new book that shines a light on an often-overlooked but ecologically important group of organisms: freshwater sponges.

Freshwater Sponges of Tennessee, published by the University of Tennessee Press, is co-authored by John E. Copeland, professor emeritus of biology and Stan C. Kunigelis, professor of physiology and director of LMU’s Imaging and Analysis Center.  The book provides the first in-depth exploration of freshwater sponge species across the state’s rivers, lakes, and streams.

Drawing on extensive field and laboratory research, Copeland and Kunigelis offer readers detailed descriptions of sponge biodiversity, distribution maps, vivid color photographs, and high-resolution electron micrographs. The book is written with both scientists and general readers in mind, including classroom educators, students, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Copeland noted “this book introduces the reader to the 14 species known to be found in Tennessee waters as well as providing information on sponge anatomy and natural history.”

“Freshwater sponges play an important role in aquatic ecosystems, yet few people know they exist,” said Kunigelis. “They filter water, support biodiversity, and even contribute to products used in human medicine.”

The book also features a glossary of scientific terms, an overview of taxonomy, and guidance for conducting sponge-related fieldwork—making it an ideal companion for ecological field trips or biology coursework.

Copeland has published extensively on freshwater sponges and a wide range of animal groups including birds, mammals, and amphibians. Kunigelis’ research focuses on zooplankton and estuarine health, and he brings technical expertise in microscopy and aquatic ecosystems to the project.

Freshwater Sponges of Tennessee is currently available in paperback, PDF, and Kindle editions. The 264-page volume retails for $35.
