The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum (ALLM) at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will host a lecture featuring Lincoln scholars Dr. Lucas Morel and Dr. Jonathan White on Thursday, October 30.
A reception and book signing will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served during the reception.
Morel and White will discuss their recent co-authored book, Measuring the Man: The Writings of Frederick Douglass on Abraham Lincoln, which examines Douglass’s evolving view of Lincoln and includes newly discovered writings that have not been seen in 160 years. The collection offers insight into Douglass’s criticism of Lincoln during the Civil War and his later admiration for the president’s leadership and legacy.
Morel will also discuss his book Lincoln and the American Founding, which explores how the nation’s founding principles shaped Lincoln’s political thought. Through figures such as George Washington and the ideas in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, Morel argues that Lincoln’s understanding of equality and liberty was rooted in the ideals of the American Revolution.
