Students from Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) were recognized for their excellence in research and leadership at the 2025 American College of Osteopathic Surgeons Medical Student Section (ACOS-MSS) Fall Conference.
OMS-II Elliot Kim, of the LMU-DCOM Knoxville campus, presented his research, “Evaluating Medical Problems of Street Medicine Patients in Knoxville, TN: The Burden of Acute Wounds and Trauma Injuries.” His study examined health trends among individuals receiving street medicine care, with a focus on wound and trauma management. Kim’s work earned him second place in the Quickshot Presentation category.
The LMU-DCOM Knoxville ACOS-MSS Chapter was awarded the Chapter Social Media Award for their efforts to increase awareness of surgical specialties and engage their peers through innovative online content. The recognition reflects the chapter’s commitment to professional development and outreach.
OMS-II Ian Svendsen, also from the Knoxville campus, presented his research titled, “Anticancer Effects of Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) and Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM), Alone and in Combination, on Aggressive Pancreatic and Prostate Cancer Cell Lines.” His project explored the potential of these compounds to inhibit cancer growth, contributing to the broader body of research seeking novel cancer treatments.
In addition to research presentations, LMU-DCOM students from both the Harrogate and Knoxville campuses participated in educational sessions, surgical skills workshops, and networking events with osteopathic surgeons from across the country. Their participation reflects LMU-DCOM’s mission to train future physicians who are prepared to meet the diverse health care needs of their communities.
