Thrush Recognized with Houston Award for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. MaryAnn Thrush

Dr. MaryAnn Thrush, associate professor of criminal justice and chair of the Social Sciences Department at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU), has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the Houston Award for Excellence in Teaching. As part of this honor, she will serve as the keynote speaker for LMU’s December commencement.

The Houston Award is one of LMU’s highest faculty recognitions, celebrating a commitment to excellence in teaching marked by high standards, impactful instruction, and lasting contributions to student success. Thrush was nominated by numerous colleagues and students who commended her professionalism, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to both her students and peers.

"Dr. Thrush is deeply committed to her students and colleagues, setting a standard of excellence both in and out of the classroom," said Dr. Lee Gilroy, associate professor of psychology and program director for undergraduate psychology. "Her professionalism, dedication to teaching, and focus on student success are surpassed only by her compassion for the well-being of others."

Student evaluations reflect Thrush’s consistent impact. From fall 2023 to fall 2024, her course ratings exceeded departmental averages. Students praise her approachable teaching style, use of real-world applications, and ability to foster an engaging learning environment.

“Dr. Thrush is an LMU icon,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Buchanan, chair of the Department of Social Work. “She is graceful, polished, compassionate and a force to be reckoned with in the classroom and beyond.”

Thrush leads the Department of Social Sciences, overseeing programs in criminal justice, political science, and psychology. Her current scholarly work explores the role of emotions in restorative justice, a topic she has actively integrated into her teaching.

“Her commitment to student learning, faculty mentorship, and scholarly contribution truly embodies the spirit of the Houston Award,” said Dr. Martin Sellers, dean of the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

The Houston Award is named in memory of Dr. John Houston, a beloved LMU professor whose career was marked by extraordinary teaching and student engagement. It is presented annually to a faculty member who demonstrates these same qualities.
