LMU Launches 24-7 TextCare for Students

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) has introduced TextCare, a 24/7, free, text-based virtual health care service now available to eligible students. The program, effective immediately, is designed to make healthcare more accessible, responsive, and stress-free.

Funded entirely by the University, TextCare connects students with licensed providers anytime, anywhere, via secure, HIPAA-compliant text messaging. Students can receive support for a wide range of needs including illness, prescriptions, lab orders, and specialist referrals—often resolved without an in-person visit.

“We recognize the barriers that can stand between students and timely medical care,” said LMU President Jason McConnell. “TextCare is one more way we’re removing those barriers and making student well-being a priority.”

TextCare is offered at no cost to students, with no insurance required. The service is available 24/7, allowing students to text a licensed healthcare provider anytime, from any location. To remain eligible, students must be actively enrolled at the end of each month to maintain coverage for the following month. TextCare is available only to students whose academic programs do not require separate health insurance; exclusions apply. An introductory message from a TextCare provider was sent to eligible students with more information.

National usage data shows that students who use text-based healthcare experience a 60% reduction in unnecessary urgent care visits and an 80% resolution rate through text alone, without the need for in-person follow-up. This approach also leads to fewer delays and significantly less stress when accessing care, making it a practical and effective solution for student health needs.

“This service is especially impactful for students in rural placements, those with limited transportation, or anyone managing packed academic schedules,” said McConnell. “It’s about meeting students where they are—literally.”

Lincoln Memorial University is a values-based learning community dedicated to providing educational experiences in liberal arts and professional studies. The main campus is in Harrogate, Tennessee.
