LMU-CDM Faculty Receives American Heart Association Grant

Karima Ait-Aissa and Modar Kassan,

Two faculty members from the Lincoln Memorial University-College of Dental Medicine have been awarded a Transformational Project Award from the American Heart Association (AHA) to support their research on the impact of novel prebiotics on brain health during hypertension.

Karima Ait-Aissa, PhD, director of research and assistant professor, and Modar Kassan, PhD, chair of biomedical sciences and associate professor, will lead the study titled “Second Generation Prebiotic and Its Impact on Cerebrovascular Function.” The research will examine how a new class of prebiotics may protect cerebral blood flow and reduce the risk of stroke in individuals with high blood pressure.

The project is being conducted in collaboration with Dr. Ishrat Tauheed at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The cross-institutional study aims to deepen the scientific understanding of the gut-brain-vascular axis and its role in hypertensive disease.

The AHA’s Transformational Project Award is a highly competitive grant designed to support innovative, high-impact research with the potential to shift current paradigms in cardiovascular science.
