Samuel Kennedy, a junior social work major at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU), has been named the first recipient of the Above and Beyond Award, recognizing his contributions to the Social Work program. The award was presented during the Social Work Month Luncheon in March, where alumna Elora Prichard, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Director of Client Services at Central Services in Morristown, Tennessee, served as keynote speaker.
The Above and Beyond Award was created to honor Kennedy’s outstanding efforts since transferring to LMU in spring 2023. From aiding in recruitment at Roane State Community College, his alma mater, to providing peer support, administrative assistance, and community outreach, Kennedy has embodied the values and mission of social work.
“Samuel was the main impetus for the award,” said Dr. Ann-Marie Buchanan, chair and program director of the Department of Social Work. “He arrived at LMU in spring of 2023 and jumped in feet first by helping students with transportation, academics, going into the community and helping with activities. He has been a real value to the Social Work Department.”
Kennedy’s leadership and service have earned him widespread recognition across campus. He was inducted into the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society, elected vice president of the Student Government Association, and serves as president of the SHARE Club after previously holding roles as treasurer and receiving Outstanding Member recognition. During his time as treasurer, the SHARE Club achieved Five-Star Status and was named Organization of the Year and received the Community Service Initiative award. Kennedy has also maintained Dean’s List standing throughout his time at LMU.
Despite the accolades, Kennedy was surprised by the Above and Beyond honor.
“I was shocked! Kristy Lee was beginning to announce the award, and I was mentally picking others out in the room who I thought would be receiving it,” said Kennedy. “But it was me, and it felt uplifting and surprising. I am honored to be recognized through this award and will be happy to see others go above and beyond for the Social Work Program, their fellow students, and LMU.”
Kennedy originally pursued political science but found his calling in social work.
“I felt that the only way to fix social issues, poverty, and inequality was to engage in the political process,” he said. “While I still feel this way, I also feel that social work will prepare me to make a positive impact on individuals.”
Following graduation, Kennedy plans to pursue a Master of Social Work (MSW), aiming to build a professional foundation that supports both individuals and systems. He also looks forward to giving back to the community this summer by serving local students through Camp LMU.
