The Lincoln Memorial University-Richard A. Gillespie College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) is launching its first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Veterinary Biomedical Science (VBMS), reinforcing its commitment to advanced research and scientific discovery in veterinary medicine. The program will be based at LMU’s Harrogate, Tennessee, campus and is set to begin in Fall 2025.

 Expanding Veterinary Research & Education

The 96-credit hour in-person program is designed to equip students with a comprehensive foundation in veterinary biomedical sciences, with an emphasis on research and specialized training. The curriculum includes 21 credit hours of core coursework, 15 credit hours of electives, and a minimum of 60 credit hours dedicated to research, ensuring that graduates develop the expertise necessary to contribute to advancements in veterinary science. The program may be completed in as little as 11 consecutive semesters, providing a structured yet intensive path to a doctoral degree.

“The introduction of our PhD in Veterinary Biomedical Science is a pivotal moment for the LMU-CVM, as it reflects our commitment to expanding veterinary research and education while addressing the unique needs of Appalachia,” said Dean Stacy Anderson, DVM, PhD, DACVS-LA. “Through this research-intensive program, we are equipping the next generation of veterinary scientists and educators to make a lasting impact on animal, human, and environmental health in our region and beyond.”

The PhD VBMS program is designed for individuals pursuing careers in veterinary research, academia, and biomedical innovation. With LMU’s strong focus on hands-on experience and scientific inquiry, students will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities, working alongside distinguished faculty members on groundbreaking projects in veterinary medicine.
