Social Work Students Welcomed Into Phi Alpha Honor Society

The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Social Work program hosted the induction ceremony for the Eta Nu Chapter of the Phi Alpha Honor Society on April 15.

The Eta Nu Chapter was chartered on February 5, 1998, following the program’s acceptance into the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Including the 2024 inductees, 102 students and alumni have been inducted into the chapter with 39% completing their master’s degrees in social work and becoming leaders in the social work in the Tri-State area.

Students recognized during the induction ceremony were juniors Sarina Keck and Natalie Mueller and senior Christine Saylor. These students achieved GPAs of 3.25 and social work GPAs of 3.57

“Academic excellence requires commitment, responsibility and perseverance combined with the support of family and friends,” said Ann-Marie Buchanan, PhD, professor of Social Work and chair of the Social Work Department. “We thank their family and friends for providing them with the supportive environment that has contributed to their academic success.”

Gracie Anderson-Shuford and Christine Saylor were recognized as the Outstanding Social Work Students of the Year for 2024.

In addition to Buchanan, the program also featured Assistant Professor of Social Work and Field Coordinator Kristy Lee, MSW; Executive Vice President for Administration Jody Goins, EdD, Executive Assistant to the President Andy Shipley, and Claiborne County Mayor Joe Brooks.

This year represents a milestone as the 50th year that social work courses have been offered at LMU. Students who would like to be a member of a dynamic and challenging profession that focuses on improving the quality of life for individuals of all ages, families, and their communities, are right at home in the social work major.

The LMU Social Work program provides students with the academic preparation and practical experience needed to start work immediately after graduation as an entry-level generalist social worker or to enter graduate school. Most students complete this professional program in the four semesters of their junior and senior years. The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the national accrediting organization for baccalaureate and master’s social work programs in the United States. The program has an advisory council composed of social work practitioners who serve as guest speakers for classes and special events, admission committee members, field supervisors, and adjunct instructors.
