Virtual Opioid Education Symposium Set for April 15

The Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) will host the 2024 Virtual Opioid Education Symposium on Monday, April 15, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  

The title for this year’s event is “MOVING AWAY FROM OPIOID RELIANCE; Interprofessional Perspectives on opioid vulnerability, prevention of substance use disorder, and treatments for sports-related injuries.” 

“Even though more research is needed, evidence clearly shows that opioid use is prevalent among athletes and exists even at the high school level with similar rates to professional athletes,” said Brandy Fuesting, DrPH, MPH, director of interprofessional education and assistant professor of public health. “Athletes can be more susceptible to opioid addiction when prescription drugs are used with injuries. It is imperative that we talk about what makes athletes more susceptible to opioid addiction to include their mental health during an injury.” 

The goal of this year’s symposium is to teach the next generation of health care professional about vulnerabilities that can exist with athletes, prevention strategies for substance use disorder, and a holistic patient care approach to the treatment of sport-related injuries.  

Attendance is open for students from osteopathic medical education, physician assistant, family nurse practitioner, pharmacy and social work programs. All interested course directors, community leaders, community partners and other trained medical professionals are also invited to attend this free event. 

The symposium is open to the community and will be held completely online via Zoom.
