LMU School of Engineering Students Earn Awards During SCUDEM

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) School of Engineering students participated in the virtual SCUDEM VIII 2023 (SIMIODE Challenge Using Differential Equations) in November.

The challenge period was October 21 – November 14. The student team from LMU with preliminary help from coach Dr. Timothy Clayton, assistant professor of mathematics, worked on one of three challenge problems in which they created a mathematical model using differential equations and prepared a ten-minute video presentation on their work for judging. Teams consisted of three or less high school or undergraduate students from one institution as well as teams consisting of participants from different institutions.

LMU’s student team consisted of Christian Crumley, Holt Hensley and Mattew Sells. They were asked to choose from one of three problems (chemistry/life sciences, physics/engineering and social sciences/humanities) and produce a mathematical model using differential equations. They prepared a ten-minute video for judges to score.

The team chose the “Dog Cannot Catch” scenario which is a physics and engineering problem. Judges awarded them a “Meritorious” award. The award recognizes good mathematics and presentation skills. You can watch the team’s presentation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da569ERuGw0.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to compete in this year’s SCUDEM Challenge for Differential Equations,” said Sells. “I enjoyed being able to collaborate with two other members of the School of Engineering. I will always take advantage anytime I can challenge myself and apply some of the things I learned in the classroom."

"It was a fun experience to be able to work on and model equations based off of real-world problems,” said Crumley.
