LMU-DCOM Students Take Home Awards from Statewide Science Convention
Three Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) student doctors won first through third place prizes at the Tennessee Academy of Sciences (TAS) statewide science convention.
The road to the TAS science convention began over the summer where students began conducting research to turn into presentable data. In October, abstracts of the data were written and submitted to the Microbiology section of the TAS. The abstracts were later accepted, and posters of the data were presented. Posters are described as mini scientific publications containing an introduction, methodology, results, discussion and conclusions
In November, LMU-DCOM students William Huff, Sarah Sperber and Michael Kalu participated in the convention where they presented their research in Microbiology. During the convention, students completed poster presentations where they stood next to their posters and explained their findings to those interested. The students were judged on their presentations and were awarded certificates for their achievements.
William Huff (DCOM-Knoxville): 1st prize
“Presenting my research alongside other incredible students was such an honor,” said William Huff. “As research becomes more and more important in developing strong residency applications, I’m especially grateful to DCOM for giving me the opportunity to conduct research and display our hard work.”
Sarah Sperber (DCOM-Harrogate): 2nd prize
Michael Kalu (DCOM-Harrogate): 3rd prize
"It feels good to see hard work pay off. Research is essential to the growth of the field, and I am glad I could be a part of that,” said Michael Kalu. “Doing research with Dr. Palazzolo has been a great experience and has helped me expand my range of knowledge and hopefully brings me closer to my goals as a physician.”
