A review article written by the students and faculty of Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) is featured as the cover story of Medicines October 2022 issue.

The article is entitled ‘Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Decreases Hospital Stay and Healthcare Cost in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.” The authors include class of 2024 doctoral students Hannah Roland, Amanda Brown, and Amy Rousselot along with four faculty members from both Knoxville and Harrogate campuses, Debasis Mondal, PhD, Stephen Bergman, DO, Natalie Freeman, PhD; and J. Michael Wieting, DO.

“We are delighted that the October issue of Medicines will include this article as its cover story,” Mondal said. “This is an excellent illustration of the faculty's and students' dedication to enhancing scholarly activities and research at LMU-DCOM. The motivation and commitment of our student doctors and their excitement towards the field of osteopathic medicine are also impressive.”

This article reviews published clinical evidence from numerous national and international colleagues, which show the advantages of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).  This review article also provides brief descriptions of the popular OMT procedures used in NICU. Findings show that OMT is beneficial in treating newborns and babies, and supplemental OMT may reduce the length of hospital stays and the cost of medical care.
