LMU Jazz, Concert Bands to Perform

The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Jazz Band and Concert Band are scheduled to perform Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. The performances will take place in the Sam and Sue Mars Performing Arts Center in the Duke Hall of Citizenship.

The bands include the talents of LMU students, faculty, staff and members of the community. There will be a wide variety of musical selections.

“Thanks to a dramatic increase in enrollment, the Jazz Band will be playing full big band charts spanning decades of material,” said Dr.  Benjamin Bruflat, assistant professor of music and director of the bands. “The program includes arrangements of pieces by Duke Ellington and Gordon Goodwin as well as modern charts by Mike Lewis and Rick Hirsch.”

The two bands are very diverse, with two distinct sounds.

“The Concert Band is also enjoying a surge in participation,” Bruflat said. “Included selections are from Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” the holiday classic “Carol of the Bells,” and contemporary music by Katahj Copley and Cait Nishimura.”

Bruflat is in his second year at LMU and added that the performers have an enthusiasm and passion for music. “They want to be there and are a good representation of the area in general.”

The performances are open to the public with free admission.
