Allen Exhibition, Reception at LMU Center for the Arts

The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Art Program is hosting an art exhibition and reception at the LMU Center for the Arts in Cumberland Gap.

“Field Work” by artist John Allen is currently on display through Dec. 10. There will be an artist’s reception Thursday, Dec. 2, from 5-7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Masks and social distancing are encouraged during the reception and exhibition.

In this exhibition, Allen responds to the current environmental epoch, the Anthropocene. According to “National Geographic,” the “Anthropocene Epoch is an unofficial unit of geologic time, used to describe the most recent period in Earth’s history when human activity started to have a significant impact on the planet’s climate and ecosystems.”

“Examining art history, regional culture, and sense of place as well as culture’s relationship to nature, the works explore the continued relevance of landscape in contemporary art while also considering the complex history of exploitation and resilience in Appalachia,” said Michael Giles, associate professor and art program director. 

The LMU Center for the Arts houses the LMU Art Program and is nestled in the historic town of Cumberland Gap. The Art Program and the Gallery at the LMU Arts Center strive to bring cutting edge contemporary art from local and regional artists to the LMU community. 

“We aim to foster conversation about the place of visual arts and how they impact the diverse community of Appalachia in the 21st century,” said Giles.

The LMU Center for the Arts is located at 703 Brooklyn St., Cumberland Gap, Tenn. It is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.
