Dr. Wieting Appointed to AOA Council on State Health Affairs
American Osteopathic Association (AOA) President Joseph Giaimo, DO, has appointed J. Michael Wieting, DO, MEd, FAOCPMR-D, FAAOE, to the AOA Council on State Health Affairs and reappointed him to the AOA’s Bureau of Osteopathic Education. Wieting serves as the senior associate dean for LMU-DCOM and also serves as professor of both physical medicine and rehabilitation and osteopathic manipulative medicine.
Within the Bureau of Federal Health Programs, the AOA Council on State Health Affairs addresses state health and regulatory issues of concern to osteopathic physicians and those they serve. The council ensures that AOA policies are followed and provides information to the osteopathic medical community, promoting active involvement of the osteopathic medical community in activities that promote the interests of the community.
The AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Education studies the continuum of osteopathic medical education and makes recommendations to the AOA Board of Trustees as to how to improve the educational system and the process through which the AOA oversees and approves or accredits programs
“I am honored to be appointed to serve in these positions by the AOA,” said Wieting. “I look forward to continuing to advocate for the osteopathic medical profession and promote the involvement of physicians and educators in the osteopathic medical community.”
Wieting has over 25 years of experience in osteopathic medical education. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Oklahoma State University-College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1990. Before that, he graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Education in professional medical education with a concentration in assessment from the University of Central Oklahoma. Wieting completed residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics and a fellowship in electrodiagnosis and sports medicine at Michigan State University (MSU). He serves on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners Test Accommodations Committee and its Special Commission on Osteopathic Licensure as well as on the Nomination Committee of the Federation of State Medical Boards.
Wieting is president of the Tennessee Board of Osteopathic Examination, past president of the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners, immediate past president of the Tennessee Osteopathic Medical Association, and vice-chair of the Coalition for Collaborative Care in Tennessee. He is the vice president of the International Society of Communication in Medical Education, a global interdisciplinary research center dedicated to improvement of quality and safety of health care worldwide focusing on communication through research in communication science. Wieting is a national faculty member of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. He has served as a team physician with the United States Olympic and Paralympics World Games for over 25 years. Wieting was awarded the 2018 Educator of the Year from the American Osteopathic Foundation and the 2019 Physician of the Year for the Tennessee Osteopathic Medical Association.
