KINGSPORT, Tennessee, May 3, 2019 – Lincoln Memorial University-Caylor School of Nursing (LMU-CSON) will offer the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program with a concentration in Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (FPMHNP) at the LMU-Kingsport extended site located at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education beginning in August 2019.
“There is a significant need for Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners,” said Dr. Mary Anne Modrcin, vice president of extended sites and LMU-CSON dean. “The FPMHNP program in Kingsport supports our mission to provide service to humanity by training nurses to help to meet the mental health needs of this region and beyond.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five Americans will experience a mental illness in a given year. The need for advanced practice registered nurses that offer primary care services to the psychiatric-mental health population has never been greater. A report released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration, shows an estimated shortage of 250,000 professionals in the field of mental health by the year 2025.
LMU’s program prepares nurses in an advanced practice role with competencies in mental health promotion and culturally competent clinical management of common conditions across the life span. LMU’s FPMHNP concentration is designed to meet standards for advanced practice education as mandated by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). The degree can be completed in 17 months of full-time study or 28 months of part-time study.
LMU-CSON has a solid reputation for educating highly skilled, compassionate nurses that employers seek out. LMU currently offers the FPMHNP concentration at the LMU-Cedar Bluff extended site in Knoxville. Graduates of the program have earned a 100% first-attempt pass rate on their national board exams since 2015. In addition, the program has also achieved a 100% employment rate within three to six months following graduation since 2014.
